This Herky is a celebration of the Iowa tradition of theater, the conferring of the very first MFA, the tradition of writing at Iowa, and a shared birthday with Lawrence Oliver’s Film, “Hamlet.” The additions to this statue are various thermoplastics and epoxies, acrylic paints and other mixed media.

Riverside Theatre
Riverside Theatre is Iowa City’s professional resident theatre, now in its 43rd season. Each year, Riverside produces a season of contemporary and classic works in its downtown Ped Mall location, which is paired with a Free Shakespeare production on the Festival Stage in Lower City Park. Riverside believes that “Shakespeare is for everyone” — outdoor productions on the Festival Stage are presented free of charge, providing high quality cultural entertainment for “The Greatest Small City for the Arts”!
During the pandemic, Riverside Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director Adam Knight met Herky at the grand opening University of Iowa’s first-ever Passport Office. “At a time when travel was something we were all wary of, it was so inspirational to be there when Herky applied for his passport and encouraged Iowans to become citizens of the world. Likewise, we believe that plays at Riverside also encourage Iowans to explore beyond the familiar and take part in conversations bigger than ourselves.”
