Alumni Band Herky was sponsored by the Hawkeye Marching Band and created in honor of the Iowa Alumni Band’s 50th Anniversary (1973-2023). To mark the occasion, new logos were created for the alumni band, and this statue parallels the new branding. Alumni Band Herky is dressed in the Hawkeye Marching Band’s “original” uniform from the 1940s and 1950s. Prior to this time, the band looked identical to other military personnel on campus. Alumni Band Herky was created by artists Amanda Stout and Mae Dunning. Amanda is an alumnus of the HMB, and Mae is a current member. Our friends at DTI Creative, who create many visual props for the HMB, assisted in the creation of Alumni Band Herky’s service cap.
Amanda Stout is an alumni member of the Hawkeye Marching Band where she participated in the trumpet and sousaphone sections. Amanda has been involved in public art projects for 3 years now painting public works in local communities around Iowa. She has been an artist for over 10 years creating her own works, commissions, and doing small gallery shows as well.
Mae is a current student at the University of Iowa studying graphic design. Mae has been a member of the Hawkeye Marching Band for 3 years while playing the clarinet. Mae is very grateful to have been given this opportunity to leave her mark on the band through art. She hopes to pursue more chances to express admiration for my interests!

Hawkeye Marching Band/Alumni
The Hawkeye Marching Band (HMB) is the sound of Kinnick Stadium and the heartbeat of The University of Iowa. Through our ideals of passionate music-making, visual precision, pride, discipline, camaraderie, inclusion, and community, the vision of the HMB is to cultivate life-long supporters of music and our alma mater. Established in 1881, the Hawkeye Marching Band has a deep and rich history through our thousands of alumni. Our organization thrives to instill a passion in students to become the best version of themselves, and allow each student a unique lens, through which to view their college experience. We recognize that our members will “go pro” in many different fields and disciplines, however, the shared experience of membership in the HMB will continue to guide every Marching Hawkeye long after they exit the field.
In October 2023, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Iowa Alumni Marching Band, an organization that is absolutely essential in connecting the Hawkeye Marching Band of the present with the traditions and legacy of its past. 340 Hawkeye Marching Band Fossils “took back the field” and marched the HMB’s historic pregame performance. We hosted nearly 500 total alumni over the course of three days: at our reception in Voxman Music Building Thursday evening, Friday’s night’s Homecoming Parade, and of course, the game on Saturday. This was the largest contingent of Hawkeye Marching Band alumni ever to return to Iowa City for Homecoming. As the Alumni Band finished their performance, the current HMB joined them on the field, as 615 marching Hawkeyes performed Alma Mater Iowa.
