ANF Herky was meticulously covered from head to toe in a mosaic of corn and beans. In honor of America’s Farmers, Herky proudly displays the ANF (America Needs Farmers) logo across his chest. ANF Herky stands as a testament to The University of Iowa’s commitment to the men and women who proudly give their all to provide the nation’s diverse food supply.
Carey (97BA) and Eli Hernandez (99BFA), met in an Art History class at the University of Iowa. While at Iowa, Carey played saxophone in the Hawkeye Marching Band. Carey and Eli were married in 2000. Carey is an Educator at the Durham Museum in Omaha and Eli is a Creative Director for Boys Town. They have four children, who in 2014 excitedly welcomed a Herky into their home for Herky on Parade II. Though they were too young to help with the first corn-covered Herky, in 2024 the whole family has a hand in the project. There is no doubt that growing up with a Herky in the house “planted the seed” that grew into a whole family of Hawkeyes. Bethy followed in Mom’s footsteps and played saxophone in the HMB and graduated from the University of Iowa in Dec. ’23 with a degree in Anthropology. Maria is a freshman at Iowa. Cal is a junior at Omaha Central High School. Niall is in 6th grade, and both also hope to be proud Hawkeyes in the future. The Hernandez family has enjoyed working on this project together and are proud to be a part of the Herky on Parade tradition. Go Hawks!
