Change is always scary. About a year and a half ago I was preparing to move to Iowa City, and to seek some comfort I looked online the etymology behind the name ‘Iowa’… My fear was immediately turned into hope as I read that it meant ‘Beautiful Land’. This is the place that has allowed me to grow as an Artist and a person, and my Herky is a tribute to its staples: The beautiful sunsets, the prairie rose (State flower), the goldfinch (State bird), and of course… the corn!
Alejandra Alvarez is an Artist-Designer-Artisan from Colombia, currently based in Iowa City. She has a curious, thorough and ‘hands-on’ outlook, which can be perceived both in person and through her artwork. Her multidisciplinary background provides a holistic approach where matter, form, text and context are explored as part of her creative process and through this juxtaposition creates syncretic artwork. Each piece she produces seeks to spark the curiosity of the beholder and invites them to interact with the artwork, the setting, with oneself and with each other… leading from contemplation to conversation.
