Being an elementary teacher I wanted to create something that was fun for both kids and adults to look at and who doesn’t like cartoons?
I have spent the majority of my life in central Iowa growing up in Norwalk and now living in West Des Moines. I am an elementary art teacher in West Des Moines where I get the privilege of watching students be creative while they explore different materials and different styles of art. I also love being creative and creating my own art and art to be shared in the community. You can see some of my paintings at https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/christie-engelbert. I also help design and paint VBS sets for my church where it is fun to see my sketches morph and come to life. You can also see one of my paintings in the West Des Moines Community Center and on some of the bunks at Riverside Bible Camp in Story City. Last spring I painted a chair for a fundraiser for the Norwalk Library, painted props for the Valley Marchmasters, and painted a corn sculpture for the city of Altoona. I am always looking for ways to share my love for art.
I am thrilled that I was able to paint a Herky sculpture. I have wanted to paint a sculpture like this ever since I went and saw the Cows on Parade sculptures in Chicago in 1999. I spent hours walking around downtown looking at all the sculptures and thinking how lucky the artists were to be able to create something like this. Now I get to be one of those artists.

When it comes to Gameday at Kinnick stadium every game is memorable. Do I start with the Wave at the end of the first quarter where 69,250 teary-eyed fans turn to the children at the hospital to give their love and support while creating an unforgettable memory during their battle? Is it a game winning field goal under the lights to upset a rival as time expires? Is it the rush of the early morning to begin the gathering of so many friends and family while they set up tailgate? Is it the blaring of Enter Sandman over the speakers while we rush through the gates to get there by kickoff? Is it the adrenaline that runs through your body while you watch the players lock hands right before the rush of Back in Black? Is it strategically planning your trip to the beer and bathroom lines so you minimize any missed game action? Is it the I-O-W-A chant going around the stadium after every touchdown? Is it the sound deafening noise on 3rd downs? Is it the marching bands halftime performance? Is it honoring a hero of the game? Or is it singing in Heaven There Is No Beer after yet another Hawkeye victory? There is no way to pick one experience when it comes to Iowa Hawkeye football because Iowa Hawkeye football is the experience.
