The design features ribbons representing the different cancer diagnoses. We hope this statue will bring joy and encouragement to patients and visitors during treatment showing them that they are not alone.
I am from a small town in Northeast Iowa called Holy Cross. I graduated from the University of Iowa in 2022 with a degree in Communications and certificate in Event Management. I now live in Iowa City and started working for the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center last May as an Administrative Coordinator. I am really excited for this project because I get to see an idea I had brought into reality.

According to the 2024 Cancer in Iowa report, an estimated 21,000 people in Iowa will be diagnosed with cancer in 2024. University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, is Iowa’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center and one of 53 NCI comprehensive cancer centers in the country. One favorite Hawkeye memory is having Herky visit patients in the hospital. Herky brings joy, laughter, and excitement to patients and families who are facing challenging medical conditions. For patients, a visit from Herky is a magical experience that momentarily lifts their spirits and provides a much-needed distraction from their hospital stay. Herky’s visits not only bring happiness to the patients but also create lasting memories that they cherish during their recovery journey. Go Hawks!
