This Herky celebrates Iowa City as the greatest small city for the arts and arts education. It features students from Iowa Conservatory and other young individuals in many forms of art from dance to acting to painting. The design starts with a single line that travels the form of Herky making both abstract shapes and realistic silhouettes of these artists.

Nolte Academy
Nolte Academy has grown from a one-woman dance studio founded by Iowa alumna Leslie Nolte to a premiere arts program with numerous specialized instructors — including 10 Iowa alumni, GO HAWKS! — and more than 1,000 students. In its 24th year, Nolte Academy’s breadth of instruction spans from dance (ballet, contemporary, modern, jazz, tap, acro) to Pilates to visual and theatre arts classes. Nolte Academy students share space with professional choreographers and actors, master teachers and renowned guest artists. Students participate in various annual productions, competitions and youth theatre opportunities. The design for Nolte’s Herky on Parade was conceptualized by Visual Arts Director Kyle Sydney Powell and implemented by students at Iowa Conservatory, Iowa’s first fine arts high school.
For many years, Nolte Academy students have danced through Iowa City’s downtown streets as part of UI’s magical Homecoming parade. The tradition brings together studio families, and gives our youngest students an opportunity to support everyone’s favorite home team alongside our most experienced performers. We’re honored to support the 20th anniversary of Herky on Parade! #HerkyForever
