Herky Laureate is a tribute to Iowa City’s storied literary history. Adorned in a tapestry of book pages featuring excerpts from celebrated Iowa Writer’s Workshop authors, this Herky embodies the essence of storytelling and creativity. Each page represents a chapter in Iowa City’s narrative as a UNESCO City of Literature, showcasing the diverse voices and perspectives that have shaped its identity. From the profound prose of Flannery O’Connor, to the cultural richness of Yaa Gyasi, Herky Laureate stands as a living monument to the literary giants who have walked these streets and the countless stories yet to be told. Lastly, Herky Laureate gives a nod to the wonderful community spirit of book clubs like my own one here in Iowa City, which has been meeting monthly since September 2008, bringing together book lovers and forging lasting friendships over a shared passion for reading.
