Our Herky exemplifies community. He wears bib overalls, representative of Iowa’s roots in farming. They are adorned with the skylines of major cities in Iowa (including Dubuque, Davenport, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Des Moines). The bright, energetic colors show that communities are full of unique people from all walks of life. The orange sun rays bursting out of the bibs cast a warm glow that captures the philosophy of people helping people.
When I was four years old and watching the popular children’s show, “Captain Kangaroo,” I saw the magic drawing board! It mesmerized me and I knew right then and there that I wanted to be an artist. In 1977 I earned an associate degree in commercial art from Hawkeye Tech. I then worked at William C. Brown Publishing for five years and the McCullough Creative Group for 28 years. Although I’m now retired, I occasionally take on freelance work. As an illustrator, I enjoy anything from technical and mechanical drawings to classic cars, dog and people portraits, cartoons, T-shirt designs and even tree carvings. I always enjoy a challenge, like working on unique, creative projects including Halloween floats, golf holes, frogs, lizards and turtles, and now Herky!

Dupaco Credit Union
Dupaco Community Credit Union is a not-for-profit, member-owned financial cooperative dedicated to the financial well-being of its members. It specializes in personalized financial counseling, money advice and education, and offers savings, loans, investments, insurance and wealth management products for individuals and businesses. In 1948, 10 meatpacking employees in Dubuque, Iowa pooled $5 each to start the credit union. Today, Dupaco has grown to serve residents in 118 counties throughout Iowa, northwest Illinois and southwest Wisconsin. Our mission and values are our moral compass—guiding us to help our members build a life worth loving and leading to brighter community for all.
I attended Iowa and as a college student loved going to the football games. I cherish the time I took my son to his first Hawkeye game when he was nine. Since then, I love attending games with my kids and friends, including my former college roommates. Nothing better.
