This Herky was designed for Iowa City’s South District, a place where different backgrounds and cultures come together. Herky “Joy of Diversity” is a celebration! Color, movement, music and ‘life’ are represented together in this piece as a tribute to multicultural Iowa City where we all converge. Differences broaden our horizons by allowing us to explore and discover something new (yet familiar). We are all unique, valuable and welcome; everyone is invited to the party of “Joy of Diversity”.
Alejandra Alvarez is an Artist-Designer-Artisan from Colombia, currently based in Iowa City. She has a curious, thorough and ‘hands-on’ outlook, which can be perceived both in person and through her artwork. Her multidisciplinary background provides a holistic approach where matter, form, text and context are explored as part of her creative process and through this juxtaposition creates syncretic artwork. Each piece she produces seeks to spark the curiosity of the beholder and invites them to interact with the artwork, the setting, with oneself and with each other… leading from contemplation to conversation.
