I wanted to capture the two perspectives of game day that happen during the moment when game goers wave to the children’s hospital and when the families in the hospital wave back. Sometimes we don’t always see others’ perspectives, only ours. I wanted to show both views from both sides. On the front of the Herky, you can see the perspective as if you are a player or in the crowd when they wave to the hospital. On the backside, you see the viewpoint as if you are the patient or family member of the patient looking down at the crowd waving. The numbers on the players were chosen to represent the year this children’s hospital was built. Looking at the front of the Herky, one sees the view and energy of game day- what we always see on television and in-person at the games. On the other hand, the backside has more details of what the reality is past that one moment of the game…. It shows the vulnerability, innocence and life of a child in the hospital.
Born and raised in Cedar Rapids, I attended Washington High School where I honed in on my skills as an artist after many years of creating and wishing to be an artist someday. After graduation, I attended Kirkwood Community College, transferred to Coe College where I received my B.F.A. in Art with an emphasis in painting. In college I focused primarily on painting and printmaking. It wasn’t until just this year did I pick up printmaking again in my studio. Since graduation, I painted in both oil and acrylic on canvas. Over the last decade, I opened my own Etsy shop where I sell my work. I have also completed several public art works through the city of Cedar Rapids, including the Overalls all Over project. In 2015, I had the amazing opportunity to illustrate a children’s book for an Iowa author which was a fun project that got me back into working with pen and watercolors. Since then, I work as a freelance artist and most recently painted the oversized chairs at Wickiup Hill in Linn County (2023). I love creating art and create art daily in my studio with my four-legged sidekick, Murphy.

Eastern Iowa Airport
CID – located halfway between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids is the University of Iowa’s airport. With five airlines, nonstop flights to 19 destinations and two Herkys in the terminal, CID is the premiere airport for Hawkeyes who are traveling for leisure and business travel.
For the past several years, CID has been the presenting game sponsor for the first game of the season. The fun of handing out free hamburgers at our tailgate party and experiencing all the excitement of the fans every fall is so special. There is nothing like that first kickoff at Kinnick.
