“Solon Strong” Herky is inspired by the hearty community of Solon, Iowa just nine miles up the road from the University of Iowa. Every July, Solon hosts its renowned “Beef Days” festival. Arguably the highlight of the festival, the “Hay Bale Toss” draws competitors from near and far to try their arms at launching a full size hay bale high into the air. Unsurprisingly, more than one University of Iowa lineman has competed for the top prize at this event.
The Solon High School Visual Arts Department is dedicated to assisting young artists in their artistic development. Students are exposed to a range of techniques and media to increase their competency and confidence as artists. The program of studies spans disciplines from classical and traditional Arts to cutting edge contemporary digital design and illustration. Visual literacy, historical and cultural awareness, and creative problem-solving skills are emphasized across the curriculum.
