“Universe Without Bounds” is a tribute to noted University of Iowa astronomer and physicist James Van Allen. Van Allen was born in Mt. Pleasant and was one of the leading researchers of Earth’s magnetosphere. He discovered belts of radiation around the planet that were later named for him. The design is meant to bring to mind a 1950s era tin space toy in colors and motifs made popular during the Space Race. The title is taken from a Van Allen speech in which he marvels at the breadth of the cosmos that we have yet to explore. “Certainly one of the most enthralling things about human life,” he said, “is the recognition that we live in what, for practical purposes, is a universe without bounds.”
