We are honoring the life of Ned Ashton in our Wherk Life Balance Herky. Ned was an All-American swimmer at the University of Iowa in the 1920s. As a working professional, he was the engineer for the original City Park Pool and for many large bridges in Eastern Iowa. The Wherk Life Balance Herky honors Ned’s dedication to his student life as a swimmer at the University of Iowa and his work life as an engineer.
We are very excited to participate as artists in our third Herky on Parade. We appreciate the opportunity to use our creativity outside of our regular professions. Each Herky on Parade marks a significant milestone for us as we grew our family and moved permanently to Iowa City. We have two boys, ages 19 and 12, and we are loyal fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes.

City of Iowa City
Iowa City Parks & Recreation offers public recreation facilities, swimming pools, programs and park. City Park Pool has been a favorite outdoor pool for more than 70 years. The current pool will be replaced with a new pool in the same location in 2025.
Many University of Iowa students and student athletes have worked part time for Iowa City Parks & Recreation over the years. University students bring talent, creativity and fun through their work with recreation programs and park crews. We’ve seen park maintenance staff on TV scoring touchdowns for the Hawks at Kinnick Stadium.
